Brian Funk has been coaching Volleyball for over 40 years
Chicago born and raised, Funk started coaching camps at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa at practically the same time he was learning how to play the game at Western Illinois University. Following early camps and Men’s Collegiate Club competition, Funk took on his first official coaching position as a Jr. High coach in Smithshire, Illinois. (1978) His first Collegiate position arrived about the same time when Monmouth College hired him to be their Division III Head Coach.
Through the years, the coaching world has brought him to:
Provo/Orem, Utah coaching Men’s Jr. College Volleyball at Utah Technical College (now Utah Valley U)
Houston, Texas as a Division I asst. at the University of Houston
Bloomington, Indiana as a Division I asst. at Indiana University
Brownsville, Texas as the Head Coach at the University of Texas at Brownsville
During his time at UT Brownsville, the Scorpions were two time National NJCAA Qualifiers finishing 5th (1995) and 9th (1998) in the National Rankings. Also during this tenure, Funk was proudly awarded two consecutive assignments as a coach at the United States Olympic Festival. 1993, he was the Assistant of the West team that competed in the inaugural sporting event in our San Antonio Alamodome. 1994, he was the Head Coach of the South team that competed in St. Louis, Missouri. Only 8 coaches were chosen from around the country for this competition that took place every year outside of an Olympic year. Funk coached the likes of Jenny Johnson, UCLA All-American/AVP alum and Christy Johnson, Nebraska All-American and National Champion; currently the Head Volleyball Coach at Iowa State University.
A curious stop took place for Brian in between his Bloomington and Brownsville posts. Funk was hired as the Director of the Alamo Volleyball Association (1992) as it made its transition from their Founder Gool Castleberry. His lone 18U team won the Tour of Texas, Lone Star Classic as well as Lone Star Regionals qualifying for the Jr. National Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Other interesting stops along the way brought him to speak at various National and local coaching seminars including the AVCA Convention and Volleyball Festival in Davis, California.
Brian followed his family and returned to San Antonio in 2001 and proceeded to coach Varsity programs at Smithson Valley, MacArthur and Poteet High Schools. He joined San Antonio Force in 2011 and coached the club’s very first 18U team which eventually became the first group to qualify for USAV Nationals. Eight seasons later Funk will Head Coach our 16 Darkside team for the 2nd straight year. This follows seasons of 18, 17 and 14 Darkside teams.
Funk has been an active participant as well since 1975. Playing Collegiate Club competition at Western Illinois, he’s also played for teams in Utah, Indianapolis (IN), Houston & Brownsville (TX). Early 80’s Houston, we found Funk playing for the Texas Stars and Caddyshack teams winning a Bronze and had 3 Top Ten finishes at U.S.Open Nationals. While coaching at UTB, Funk still competed with the Texas Stars in the Senior Divisions and were crowned National Champions (40 & over, 1996/Dallas). Took a break to have both hips replaced and has most recently played in the Open Championships (Dallas, 2018/ 60 and Way over division)
Brian is married to Karen Funk, Executive Athletic Director of Northeast Independent School District. They have three sons Garrett, Taylor and Zachary as well 3 Grandchildren Jonah, Harper and Dakota.
